| EARLY ACADEMICS and INTERESTS. The seeds of Barbara's later-in-life career in psychology were sown in the early 1960's when she completed her BA degree in Honour Psychology at the University of Toronto. Already a trained and experienced "Teacher of the Deaf," however, she chose to remain in that special field, completing her Master of Arts degree in Communications Disorders/Deaf Education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1966. There followed 20-plus years' service as a special educator of hearing impaired, speech disordered and learning disabled students, first in Ontario where she was born and raised, and eventually in British Columbia, Canada. | |
| RETURN TO PSYCHOLOGY. Feeling guided toward her early interest in psychology, Barbara left teaching in 1988 and, at age 48, returned to the charms and challenges of academic life, this time at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. She obtained her Ph.D. in Counselling Psychology in 1992 and qualified for licensure for professional private practice in British Columbia in 1993. In conjunction with her doctoral program, she published extensively on her research into psychological issues of deaf parents with hearing offspring and educational interpretation for hearing impaired students. |  |
| PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS and PRACTICE. Barbara was a registered member of the College of Psychologists of British Columbia until her retirement from private practice in December of 2004. She has held professional memberships in the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology (ACEP), and Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Her professional experience ranges from agency and hospital-based psychological services to holistic private practice and distance work by telephone. | |
| THE
LIGHT DAWNS. In 1998, Barbara first ventured into the domain of
energy-based health service by taking a weekend training course in Healing
Touch for Animals. Her sole intent was to learn loving, hands-on, health-care
techniques she could use with her beloved quarterhorse, Oklahoma "Okie"
Oiler. Although Okie was as healthy as the proverbial horse, she wanted
to keep him that way well into his (and her) dotage.
In a flash of intuitive brilliance during that first Healing Touch course, Barbara realized that such loving, energy-based healing interventions would serve her counselling clientele at least as well as they would her horse. Hence, her commitment to training in both Therapeutic Touch and Healing Touch (for people!), and by mid-1999, she completed the rigorous, multi-level Healing Touch program. Barbara's interest in animal welfare continues, however. She recently completed research into the use of energy-based interventions with sheltered cats and dogs at the Parksville-Qualicum SPCA. |

| ENERGY PSYCHOLOGY. With her lively interest in energy-based healing, Barbara inevitably discovered the exciting new frontier of Comprehensive Energy Psychology. Since then, she has trained in a variety of state-of-the-art energy-based methodologies (click on Barbara's Energy Training background). With great joy and rewarding results, she routinely integrates clinically-proven Energy Psychology principles and practices with traditional approaches to psychotherapy. Barbara offers training and workshops in a popular, user-friendly Energy Psychology approach, the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). She has also introduced workshops in energy-based self-care based on her self-published book, Feeling Free! A Guide to the Energetics of Self-Care. For more information and ordering MINISTERIAL SERVICE: In March, 2003, Barbara received ordination as a Minister. She and her husband, Rev. Theadore H. Swenson, have founded the Church of Healing Energy, a non-denominational, non-profit spiritual organization devoted to the ordination and professional development of healing ministers. Information about the new Church is available at energychurch.org HUMANITARIAN INTERESTS. Barbara has particular interest in the humanitarian relief of psychological trauma. She has served on the Humanitarian Aid Committee of ACEP and Trauma Relief Resources. From 2001 to 2003, she served as Project Advisor to the "Energy Touch Therapy for the Philippines" project. As well, she sponsors children and their families in Malawi, Chad, Colombia, and Guatemala, and donates $1.00 from every copy sold of Feeling Free! to World Vision for disaster relief. ENERGY AWARENESS. In the course of working with energy-informed treatment modalities, Barbara has developed a new and passionate interest which she calls, "Energy Awareness" or, in more traditional terms, "dowsing."
